The manufacturer boasts about this machine as being a great platform for music and media entertainment as well as running software programs that assist in getting work done such as Microsoft office and Adobe products. Perhaps they are not wrong to boast this and on the whole they may in fact be among the best manufacturers of laptops currently on the market. However my personal experience was unpleasant enough that I am now in the process of returning it a little over a month later.

Shortly after taking it out of the box, and playing some music I noticed that every few minutes result in a horrendous crackling sound on the speakers. Whatever music I am listening to suddenly gets muffled and for an instant sounds as though the entire band has been thrust into the depths of the ocean only to rise again completely dry. Moreover, this process slows down everything else on my system while it occurs. I tried a variety of things to fix this problem including reinstalling the sound drivers and contacting Lenovo, but it was all to no avail.

A couple of nights ago the system locked up and would not let me click on anything though the mouse itself could move on the screen. The following day it was systematically locking me out of the system and forcing me to sign back in even if I had been in the middle of something. Once I contacted the manufacturer and restored it to its last known working setting, I assumed it would work until of course I received the blue screen which we all know and love with a 0x00000101 error, which is software related. Therefore the next step would have been to reinstall windows. This was when I realized that my laptop did not come with the system restore disks. Admittedly it might have and I may have misplaced them though that is rather unlikely as I made a point of being very anal in keeping everything together upon the machine's arrival.

Like I mentioned in my first paragraph all of this could very well be an isolated incident. However when "Lenovo Ideapad sound problem" is googled, one might find that their laptops do indeed have quite a history of this sort of problem. I have read that it might result from a poor motherboard design, though I have no evidence to support that as nothing more than speculation. If you purchase it, you may love it and I sincerely hope you do. It has many nice qualities and I myself would adore this computer were it not for the onslaught of issues I have contended with specifically in the last forty eight hours.

Shouldn't be writing this when so angry...., February 25, 2012

Should not be writing a review when full of anger and frustration. This laptop was a Christmas present but by Valentine's Day it was dead. It will not boot up. Appears that power supply is fine because the power bar is lighted (amber color)
What is infuriating is the type of "customer support" I received. Raja S. (who refused to give me his last name) needs extensive training in customer support and technical troubleshooting.
He mocked me when I could not locate the tiny button he said I needed to hold along with the power button, "You have to hold them for one minute."
After a minute transpired, (I actually thought we were disconnected because of the dead air on his end), I informed him that nothing happened. The laptop is still not booting up.
He said, "You have to hold the buttons for 3-5 minutes."
WHAT?!?!?
Fortunately I had two other family members with me so we took turns holding the buttons while we watched for the 5 minutes to be up.
After that Raja S. said we have to send the laptop back to the Depot and we have to pay for one way shipping. What?? No RMA# - he said no.
He also said we would have to pay if they find out the laptop is damaged. Ummm.. We already paid $599. for this paperweight.
When gathering my information, Raja was not very helpful in soliciting my contact information. Again, dead air. I could not tell if he was ready for my information or not or even if he hung up on me.
I finally asked, "Hello Raja are you there?"
He got snippy and said, "I am waiting for your address not just the street where you live."
I finally flipped out at him about this whole experience. I work in customer service and would probably be given a strong reprimand if I treated my customers as I was treated.
He proceeded to put me on hold from 16 minutes.

I will never purchase another Lenovo product again based on both the reliability of the product and the lack of customer support. This is the first time I ever had a computer or laptop die after such a short period of time and this is also the first time I called a "help desk" and spoke with someone so apathetic.

After some research we settleted on this Notebook as the best balance of price to performance.

Pro's - The screen is beautiful, it's fast, and feature rich. Batter life is pretty good. The 1 year free accidental damage warranty.

Con's - It's heavy, it has some pre-loaded bloatware. It only has a CD/DVD player/burner. It's a HD screen and has an HDMI out port, it would be nice to have a BluRay drive.

I would reccommend this computer for anyone who is looking for a good general use notebook.

Great little laptop with satisfying performance, December 29, 2011

This is an interesting machine in that it's kind of an in-between: more functionality and larger than a tablet, but smaller and less powerful than more expensive, larger laptops. For me, it's great. Just make sure that that is what meets your needs. I wanted to replace an aging 15" Toshiba laptop that was heavy and slow. I really debated getting a tablet; I love the portability and am very fond of Android and iOS. In the end though, I would be spending $500 plus for a device without a keyboard and lacking too many features I've come to rely on in with Windows. I should also say that I was able to snag this from Amazon when it was $450; I honestly wouldn't spend $600 on this machine. If it weren't for that price drop, I would have gone with the AMD Fusion version.

So here are some notes that may help you decide if the DM1 is right for you:
-At this price point, don't expect high-end build quality and materials. I'll say that it is sufficient, but not impressive. It's pretty plasticy feeling and just about every surface holds on to fingerprint oils making it look greasy very quickly. It seems pretty solid plastic though-- not much flex that I can notice. The battery sits flush in the body (which is very appreciated) though doesn't click in like I thought it would. It hasn't fallen out, and it may just be my unit, but I'd prefer a more satisfying click when it goes in. Also, the thin plastic bezel around the screen feels pretty cheap. I can sometimes squeeze around the bezel and feel it pop in to place; signifying that the bezel is coming loose just from opening and closing the computer (I haven't taken it out of the house so I know it's not being banged around in a bag or anything which would be more understandable).
-I've read some complaints about the 1366x768 resolution that is standard on so many laptops including this one. I would agree for a 15" computer, but on an 11.6" screen it's really not bad at all. The display itself looks bright and pretty good straight on, though washes out pretty considerably at any angle. Again though, with a laptop this size you probably aren't going to be sharing the screen with anyone so this would rarely be a problem.
-I'm pretty impressed with the keyboard. It spans just about the whole width of the base and feels very natural-- better feel than my older Toshiba. My wife has a white Macbook which has a similar keyboard design which I really like. The trackpad is pretty good too. I'd like it to be a little larger, but there really wouldn't be room for a larger one. The buttons below are very clicky and large.
-I've only been using the computer a little over a week, though I thought the battery life would be a little better. I know knot to expect battery life anywhere near HP's claims. I'd guess I get around 3 hours on a full charge. My use has been mostly web browsing, video watching, music listening, and emails.
-Lastly, I'm very pleased with the performance. As I just said, I'm not doing any kind of demanding tasks (if I were, I wouldn't have considered a small laptop like this). The hard drive is more than enough (would have actually preferred the 7200rpm 320gb in the Fusion model), ram seems sufficient, no complaints about the processor either. I wish I had more to say about the performance, though it's pretty good when it just works as you want it to.

Overall, I'm very pleased with it. It's light, very portable, performs great, and has a great design. All of that is enough for me to overlook the less than spectacular build quality and materials. I'd like to state again that I don't think the processor and hard drive bump is worth the price increase from the AMD Fusion model; I just happened to look at this version when the cost was about the same. Granted, I haven't used the Fusion version; I'm sure there is a performance drop, but would likely be fine for my uses. If you can score this model for $500 or less I think it's a tremendous deal. Everything else in that price range has lower powered specs and doesn't look as nicely designed in my mind.

I received this laptop 2 hours ago. Turned it on, got it set up. Then when I went to shut the screen (barely touched the screen) it shut off and would not come on again. Found out the battery is embedded so it cannot be removed but there is a battery reset button, hit that and was able to turn it back on. Got it started up again and again barely touched the top of the screen and it crashed. There is obviously some connection that is screwed up. I will be returning this laptop and going with a different one.

The ASUS A53-AS31-RD is a very good general purpose laptop. It works well with productivity applications, web browsing and basic photo editing. It multitasks well (playing music and working on Office applications). The area around the keyboard and touchpad and the top are each textured; that and the dark red color keep this machine from being a fingerprint magnet: good design!

Ports include an SD media slot, a LAN connection, three USB ports and HDMI out. Battery life is average; around 3 hours out of the box, although you can probably coax more out of it with adjustments in the Windows 7 control panel or the included ASUS desktop power management gadget. Out of the box it was relatively free of unwanted bloatware or trial versions of programs (kudos to ASUS for that).

This computer does not ship with recovery media; you'll need four DVDs when you run it's built-in utility to create your own (do this first!).

Overall, this is a solid laptop that should serve well for all but the most demanding computing needs. The color breaks it from the packs of black, silver and white machines out there! Watch for deep discounts to make this unit even more attractive.

Note: this machine's default hard drive configuration includes two logical partitions, with about 75% devoted to a "D" drive for data. I used Windows disk management tools to shrink that volume and restore all the free space to the "C" drive. This is just my preference, but it can help avoid issues with applications that struggle to remember "non-C-drive" locations for storing data files.

Understand this is priced to be an introductory type laptop- so had lowered expectations when ordering. However, saw positive reviews regarding several other Asus models and took a chance. Was very surprised at how slow it was- and that was for simple tasks like browsing- not gaming. Not having Intel inside really makes a huge difference. Felt like I went back in time ten years so slow and clunky. Overall design was ok- nice screen size. But in light of slowness am sending back.

I bought this laptop after a few months of longing, a few weeks of research, and a few days of price hunting. My requirements were fairly simple. I wanted Windows 7 with an i3 or better, at least 4GB of RAM (upgrade-able to 8) and a 320GB drive or bigger. I also wanted to spend no more than $500.

The system arrived within a few days and I excitedly opened it and read through the instructions (this is out of character, but I understand the importance of first start up). The first step was running the backup (4 DVDs later..) and then I worked on removing the bloat. ASUS, like so many others, ships with a bunch of crap you don't need, though in this case it was less than I expected.

The system itself is nice and quick. I have had it playing Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (the new one) and it performs nicely. I've also had it running a Folding@Home client (see [...]) which nets around 2000 points per day. This compares to about 200-300 on my old Athlon64 Desktop machine.

Other notes:
- The power socket is on the left hand side about halfway between the front and the back, and the connector itself is a right-angle. This is a weird place, but is convenient. My wife's most recent Dell had a side connector and it was still damaged through leaning it on things it shouldn't be. I feel the design and location on this laptop would prevent a lot of those issues.

- The laptop feels very cool, even while pumping out very hot air through the vent. It's warm on the legs, but by no means hot like I've experienced with older laptops.

- The numeric keypad is nice, but is a little weird if you're used to the separated keypad on larger laptops or desktop keyboards. More than once I've hit the right-arrow while trying to tap zero. It can feel very crowded in that area also, with the keys from the left arrow all the way over to the ./delete key being the same size (along with those around them) so it can be difficult to place fingers without looking.

- HDMI works and carries sound with it. I had it hooked in to a 55" LCD TV a few days ago playing Need for Speed quite nicely. I didn't think to check what resolution it was at (I suspect the native resolution of the laptop's panel as it was mirroring), but it looked really nice. Others may be more picky about this than I..

All things considered this seems to be a fine machine, especially for the price, and I expect it to last for quite some time into the future.

Very good, compact, solid laptop, March 18, 2012

I received this laptop about a month ago, and so far I like it very much.

Pros:
-Compact (Thin screen and body, compact even for a 14"- I got a 13.3" sleeve and it fits)
-Great battery life (I have had it on and working for 3+ hours, and charge still above 50%)
-Stays cool - even sitting on my lap, I have never felt this laptop get hot
-Great sound - very loud and clear sound, I was amazed at the sound for such a small computer.
-Solid - Brushed aluminum top and inside, looks good too

Cons:
- SD slot is a little tricky to access and use
- The light which indicates the battery is charging is unnecessarily large and bright, while the other indicator lights are very small and poorly marked.
-The pictures can be deceptive, the screen does not extend as far as shown. I like the screen, but I was disappointed because the illuminated area of the screen does not extend as far as shown.

Other stuff worth mentioning:
-Mouse pad is not for everyone. It has a lot of functions, but I have not found them very useful.
-Processor is plenty fast for everyday computing. I don't really do anything that requires lighting speeds though. Starts up and shuts down quickly.
-It has a USB 3, if you need one of those.

Overall I am very happy with this computer's functionality and portability. I recommend this computer for occasional travelers or anyone who wants a compact portable computer.

The portability of the laptop is very good. As expected, the performanace is very average. Also, it is very inconvenient that there is no optical drive. The sony external optical drive is not compatible with the device as the device does not have an ilink port, which is a very stupid design. I tried many cables and could not make it work. The Sony tech support is terrible!

Ability to choose between legacy partition table (MBR) or GPT in bios
Restore DVD is included, if you restore from the included dvd you get a fresh install of windows without any bloatware, be warned however: drivers are not on dvd, download them first
AMD cpu

Cons:
Zero key on number pad is small, I use my thumb for zero and have managed to keep hitting right arrow key instead of zero, will change mapping to change right arrow to zero, long live hjkl
All of the ports are really tight, it's difficult to insert/remove usb drives/cables/ethernet cable
I have not found a hard drive cover to replace hard drive, user guide doesn't mention how hard drive is/if accessible
microphone is located just below control key
Sound is very weak, lots of trebble, no depth
blue leds for hd, battery, wlan, blue led ring around power button

Other thoughts:
Upgraded ram to 8gb of 1333mhz kingston value ram
Windows Experience Index is as follows:
CPU: 6.8
RAM: 7.3 (8gb kingston, didn't test 4gb stock samsung)
Graphics (aero): 5.9
Graphics (gaming): 6.5
Hard drive: 5.9

Dual booted with Ubuntu 11.10 (most distributions will require a nomodeset, simple graphics mode, to be passed in grub or all you will get is a black screen, once installed you will need to install fglrx video drivers). Can't comment on the battery yet, but will edit once I do some tests.

Things that work out of the box with Ubuntu 11.10
webcam, bluetooth, wireless, wired, hdmi, two finger touchpad scrolling gesture
I have not tested microphone, and audio over hdmi doesn't work out of the box in ubuntu

I'm overall very pleased with this Samsung notebook. This is my first retail computer purchase, all of my previous computers have been custom builds from parts purchased from newegg, amazon, zipzoomfly, etc. The one things that really bothers me is that I might have to remove the entire bottom panel, screws under the feet of the laptop, to access the hard drive. The Ram cover was identified both on the bottom of the case and in the user guide, if anyone knows how to easily change the hard drive, please let me know.

Update 2/4/12
The wireless chipset (lspci says it's an) Atheros AR9485 rev 01
It does support packet injection, aircrack does just over 1.5k keys/second
After 30 minutes of having all my cores at 100% utilization, the internal temp sensor was at 91.0 degrees C (195.8 degrees F)
As far as battery life goes, in Ubuntu running XFCE4, with laptop-mode-tools installed and most things disabled at startup
3:25 at minimum brightness watching you tube videos, bluetooth off, wifi on
5:30 at minimum brightness doing homework, bluetooth off, wifi on, watched 1x 30 minute video (school related)

I wondered if this HP DM1-4050us would be fast/strong enough to help me keep up with my home business while away traveling. It has surpassed my expectations. It is very light, but still sturdy. There is no lag on the internet or streaming video. No trouble at all. I have loaded a couple of resource heavy software programs, and the little machine shows no adverse effects what so ever. I am looking forward to traveling with this lightweight, small little package of dynamite. I am very happy I chose a full fledged computer over just a netbook.

My laptop was stolen a few weeks ago and I needed one quickly for school. If my only intention was to get a laptop for writing papers and surfing the web I would have spent less and almost anything would have worked. I do however like to edit videos in premiere, and pictures in photoshop. I also like to watch and record HD tv and do some occasional gaming. After about a week of looking at different laptops I decided I wanted something with the new AMD A-Series processors with the integrated graphics GPU.

This has been a great machine. Because of the new processors if you aren't doing much then the machine doesn't use much power or processing power. I am getting around 4 hours battery life with several applications open and wifi. I think I could probably get like 5 1/2 if I turn off wifi and turn down the screen all the way. Considering this is a 15'' fully operational laptop (not a table or netbook) this is pretty good battery life.

So far the integrated GPU has performed without any hiccup with HD video and gaming. (Though I haven't installed any newer graphic intense games). Lenovo builds a very sturdy machine and it has I believe a brushed aluminum case. Waking up from Sleep or Hibertation is much faster than previous machines I've own (toshiba and MSI). It seems to instantly connect to wifi on wake-up, as opposed to my MSI which had to reconnect every time.

The keyboard is very comfortable and everything is well designed. It is just a little bit loud though for typing in a quite library or class room setting. The speakers are fairly impressive for a laptop that isn't a media intensive machine. The web cam is standard and doesn't deliver great video.

Because of the casing it is not as finger-print prone as other plastic cased computers.

So far (I have owned this three weeks) it has never been more than slightly warm on the underside. Mostly it is very cool to the touch and only if I am watching a movie with it sitting on the bed or something does it even begin to get warmer.
It is very quiet, I have not even heard the fan yet.

For clarification because amazon lists two different specifications, this machine has:
- AMD A6-3400 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (1.4 GHz processor that automatically overclocks to 2.3 Ghz) This is a quad-core processor. Don't be alarmed by a seemingly low 1.4 Ghz processor, like an automatic transmission this is low to conserve power consumption but can boost itself up and with 4 cores is very quick. (Think at least a Intel i5 core)
- 6 GB of RAM
- 64 Bit Windows 7 HP
- The WEI score is 5.9 only because of the hard drive which is 5400 rpm I believe. The processor is 6.1, RAM is 7.2 graphics 6.5 These are decent scores for a laptop sub $1000
- 700 GB Hard Drive at 5400 RPM

This is a great value for the price and I highly recommend it. I have no complaints at the moment. If you are a lite gamer or you need a good graphics component to your machine, or you would simply like a good solid machine that has great battery life and plenty of storage then this machine is right for you.

I am impressed with Lenovo so far.

March 23, 2012 Update

After owning this now for several months and using it on a daily basis for work and school, I am very confident in continuing to recommend this. My battery life has stayed between 4-5 hours (with screen brightness turned down fairly low). The machine continues to be quick and responsive, no problems at all with Windows 7 (and now Windows 8 installed as dual boot). The machine is still cool to the touch, with little to no fan noise. I would absolutely buy another one if this one were lost or stolen and probably will buy Lenovo again in the near future.

I purchased the A53U-ES21 but stumbled on this product with a poor review. This is exactly the same laptop that I purchased, this just has a larger hard drive (500GB instead of 320GB). Yes, this laptop is not lightning fast but it is a great laptop. I have not noticed any lag or times of no response. I did, however, format the hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7 (not included) because there is a lot of preloaded garbage on there.

I am enjoying my first month with the Asus laptop. My previous laptop was an HP Pavilion 15.5 inch glossy screen. I really like the matte screen of the Asus. As far as screen size, I debated going with the Asus 15.6 vs the 14.1 and decided the 14.1 would be better, given the lower screen resolution. I am totally fine with this decision. I am also very happy with the lightweight laptop and battery life with the standard 6 cell battery. No doubt helped by the smaller screen real estate, I am getting a legitimate 5 hours of use. This is compared to my old HP with a 12 cell battery (heavy) and getting only 2.5 hours.

Also, the wifi is excellent as far as speed maintained and range. I can easily get 25 feet away from my modem, through several walls and still get 80% of the highest speed that I would get standing next to my modem.

Another plus is this laptop runs cool to the touch. No more singed thighs. And the "ice cool" technology also keeps the palm rest comfortable.

My only two concerns with the Asus are keyboard related. The keys are less contoured than I would like, so it is slightly easier to mistype. Having a little more space between them would be helpful. Also, the Caps Lock key (as well as the other keys) lacks an LED indicator. This could have been done and I would gladly have paid more for it. These are minor complaints and would not keep me from recommending this unit. Now, as to longevity...we shall see.

5/4/12 update: I need to downgrade from 4 stars to 2 stars. ASUS product support is virtually non-existent. Sent an email in to product support and it took six days to get a reply. Website is in English, somewhat. Went on to live chat today for support. Nobody came online for almost thirty minutes. Then a message appeared which said "engineers are busy, click here for support site". So I clicked there and another message came up: "Bad request". So, I next called someone who tried to help but suggested I call back the next day to get an RMA. I asked for my case number and he said he can't give me one as they were having problems with their software!

I still like the laptop, but with non-support like this, I will not buy another product from ASUS.

5/10/12 update 2: Actually contacted by ASUS rep after seeing this post. I like that they are willing to make improvements. People just want to know that the company they buy a product from will actually care enough to support that product and improve satisfaction. Upgraded from two stars to three stars. I still like the laptop and am liking ASUS more, thanks to Tien.

Had this laptop for a few days now and I love it! Its super fast, lightweight and beautiful design. I really like the keyboard. The individual letters are spread out. Only complaint to the keyboard is the enter and backspace button is little small and the left arrow is right next to the 0 which is annoying at times. I couldn't believe the price for 6GB memory 500GB RAM and i5 processor. Comparing price vs. features, Lenovo beats the competition. I've had a HP for 3 years, which broke on me, and switching over to Lenovo was the best decision I've made.

I chose this laptop because it has the AMD A-series A8 chip... This is a powerful integrated graphics processor for a mid/low-end laptop and I'm surprised just how great a deal this machine is. The game performance is impressive - according to a few reports online (youtube videos and PC harwdare test sites) compared to Intel i3 with integrated graphics it's double in terms of games performance) and it's very fast in Sketchup too. I almost went for the newer model suggested... but that only had an A6 chip... if you need a little extra performance buy this computer, you won't regret it. Speakers are average (ie weak) but not a deal breaker for me. Nice a light, LOVE the fast start feature - that's awesome. Samsung are doing great things.

Having just purchased a similiar laptop with the same exact specs and processor from another manufacturer, I was literally blown away by this laptop's performance. After uninstalling all the bloatware, downloading the latest bios and drivers from both Samsung and AMD this laptop posts the following WEI...

Processor: 6.9 (Just shy of a typical quad-core desktop cpu)
RAM: 6.9 (probably due to latency and cpu speed)
2D Graphics: 5.9 (far above most on-board graphics)
3D Graphics: 6.5 (amazing since it costs $100 or more for a GPU equal to this rating)
Hard Drive: 5.9 (standard for any 7200 RPM drive)

With all this said, I had to install more RAM and add an SSD on my other laptop to meet this level of performance. So, I'm very impressed to say the least.

Note: To truly see performance gains with this laptop be certain to 1)uninstall all bloatware, 2) update the BIOS and all drivers from samsung.com, 3) use the grpahics card auto-detect from AMD.com and install the latest Catalyst driver, and finally 4) clean the registry. The laptop will run 20-30% faster than out of the box if you do.

This laptop is appealing to anyone looking for ultra-portable laptop at a normal notebook price. It is a pretty good overall package. After using it for couple of weeks, I'm really satisfied with it. This will serve me well as my main laptop for couple of years (hopefully longer), since I primarily use it for web browsing, document editing, minimal photo editing and similar, nothing too CPU intensive.

Windows 7 works really well out of the box. But, I like to use Linux and am running ubuntu on it as my primary OS, that's the main reason I bought this laptop. But I used Windows 7 on the laptop for sometime and found it to be a great OS, very polished and solid. Everything worked effortlessly.

I bought it from HP and has the i3-2367M processor, which is slightly faster than the i3-2357M mentioned on this product on amazon. I'd recommend getting the better, if the price is same. cpubenchmark dot net rates i3-2367M (score=1921) a 16% better than i3-2357M (score=1650).

FIRST IMPRESSION

This a very cool little device. Unboxing was a joy, to uncover the tiny laptop out of its package. There's really very few laptops out there, which are so small and yet so cheap, but at the same time, provide enough CPU and Memory to last you a few years.

You should know that all the praise is in context of the price. This is no macbook air, not even close. But then it costs half the price of a macbook air. Its an HP and its plasticky but it feels much nicer because of the better build quality. Under the body, it has an aluminium frame, so its probably stronger than it looks.

Chracoal color is really just a fancy name for black. Its really not much different from black. The screen bezel is black, the keyboard is black. The surface surrounding the keyboard is just a tad lighter than black (hence charcoal). Similarly the surface on top and bottom of the laptop are also blackish/charcoal.

The i3 processor at 20% usage can easily handle 5-6 web browser tabs, youtube or any other video and few other apps. So, its good enough for most users.

My biggest complaint was with all the HP crapware that came preinstalled on this computer. HP likes to overwhelm the machine with all kinds of rubbish software no one needs or uses. HP Market, HP games store, HP book store, HP music store, HP launcher to name a few. And if that's not enough, many of them are loaded on windows start up so it makes system slower. It just was a very crappy experiences using the computer for the first time. All the poorly written software actually made the computer slow and sluggish. And it ran a little hot with the fan frequently on. I had to take the time and uninstall all of them and then it was much better.

HP doesn't know software, they are a hardware company .... period. I have never seen so many horrible apps from 1 company all at 1 place. When you setup your user account on windows for the first time, HP likes to set its logo as the windows user image/icon, by default. Most computers these days offer you a choice to use as your user image a set of icons or even the ability to shoot your photo with the webcam and set it as your user image, but not HP. They like to own us by pasting their logo on us. Its not a big deal, just a minor annoyance, but its small things like these which lead to a poor first experience.

HP!! if you read this, please save us from the wrath of your developers. We are paying you for this nice machine, please just give us windows and just the drivers. No lousy softwares please.

SECOND IMPRESSION

After the HP crapware was gone, the computer was much nicer. It was fast and responsive and the CPU is sufficient for most day to day activities. Mine has 4GB memory which is enough memory, for normal usage. I believe this computer can really benefit from an SSD drive. I noticed that the Disk I/O was the only stat which stayed slightly higher. Although, with the 500rpm hard drive, this is still very usable, and there's no major complaints here. But if someone wants better performance, an SSD drive should be the first thing to consider. Although thats an extra $200 minimum, which puts this laptop in a different price range. I wouldn't recommend getting the SSD preinstalled from HP though, because that will make this a $900 machine, which is too much for it. You can shop for better options in that price range.

If you're a power user and a tinkerer, this machine is an absolute delight. When you take the battery out, you can remove the bottom cover which is just sort of locked in, no screws. After you remove the cover, you can see the RAM, Hard drive and the rest. Everything is easily accessible and upgradeable. You can buy an after-market Memory or SSD Drive and stick it in there.

I tried Chromium OS (unofficial) on this laptop, and it ran surprisingly well. So, if you're tech-savvy this can be your... Read more

Unfortunately it only lasted three weeks, then the motherboard died. This apparently is a common issue, at least when you google "Lenovo won't turn on". At least it died during the return period :( . While it worked, it did whatever I asked it to (mainstream computer use), it has a great keyboard, is light and the build quality seemed good compared to the Gateway and Toshiba laptops I have purchased in the last three years. Oh well.

But the rest of the bundle. It's kind of a mix bag. Got a good lens! Some filters and wideangle lenses. We're good. But the bag andthe tripod is of very poor quality I had to buy my own tripod and camera bag. Otherwise. I'm happy with my purchase!!

This camera package, sold by Willoughby Camera in NYC, is quite a good buy. All of the essentials (charger, extra battery, case, lenses, etc.) are Canon brand. The other included stuff is high quality and quite nice. Willoughby's even included several additional items (a pleasant surprise). Overnite shipping was uneventful and relatively inexpensive at $49.

Regarding the camera, even though I've only had it one day, it exceeds my expectations. Most of the controls are intuitive. This is really a good SLR digital for a move up from point-and-shoot camera. The resultant images are breathtaking in terms of sharpness and exposure (I've been using only the "automatic" feature, in that all controls are set automatically by the camera). As I get to understand the camera better, I'll probably try some "manual" settings, but for now there is no reason to rush ahead. I'm going to use the telephoto lens this afternoon.... can't wait!

I am very impressed with Willoughby's.... will probably be ordering more from them in the future.

I am not a camera expert, but rather, I'm a busy mom who likes to take pictures and who adores my subjects. This, then, is a review from a busy mom/amateur's point of view.

MY GOALS/EXPECTATIONS:

I have always been a photo fiend, taking my camera everywhere and pulling it out at any opportunity. While I'd gotten to a decent level of archiving important moments with my point-and-shoot cameras over the years, I wanted to take my photography to the next level. I was inspired by my brother-in-law's photos of his kids to take the dSLR plunge. But I knew (and still know), very little about professional photography. I wanted to start taking better photos right away. But I also wanted to have room to grow as a photographer and a camera that would grow with me.

I also wanted the focus to stay firmly on my family - while I was willing to invest some time and care into the camera, I didn't want it to become like a pet I had to constantly watch over. While any dSLR takes some care and consideration, I've found the T3i has been an excellent camera for me and I've been quite pleased with it.

PROS:

* VERY USER FRIENDLY: The auto mode (or auto without flash, my favorite) is highly forgiving, taking fantastically sharp images, true to color. They look so clear that I feel I'm capturing as close to real life as I've ever seen before in a camera.

* FAST: While I sometimes go in for trying out new modes and manual settings, I often leave the camera in auto or auto-sans-flash mode and just click away so that I can at least capture a moment before it's gone. I then play with manual settings if my kids stay still long enough for me to try something new. My previous cameras always had a horrible delay for the autofocus (the only mode they usually had), meaning I nearly always lost the moment when the toddler was on the move. The t3i is so ridiculously fast that I can snap multiple pics in the time one picture took before.

* BEAUTIFUL PICTURES: This kind of goes without saying at this tier of camera, but the pictures are just amazing quality. Coming from the land of point-and-shoot, I'm pretty blown away. And I know I'm only touching the tip of the iceberg for what's possible.

* BEAUTIFUL VIDEO: This is the nice new feature of the t3i. I wasn't sure I'd want or need the HD video. But hey, when you've got it, you use it. I've gotten some amazingly clear footage of the kiddo playing in the park with daddy and I'm so glad we went for the model with that feature.

* BIG, CLEAR DISPLAY: It's really easy to see what pics you've just taken and adjust your photo-taking accordingly. Just by seeing what I've gotten, I'm able to try again and improve a shot almost immediately.

* CLEAR MENUS/ABILITY TO IMPROVE: The interface on this is so intuitive that I've been able to learn a lot without even cracking open the manual (though that manual is my new reading material). The entry point for a new user is just a step up from normal photography - the possibilities, however, are nearly endless.

* NICE KIT LENS: For all that photographers get into new and better lenses, the kit lens on this is really nice and easy to use. I think it will hold us for a good long while before I get to be more of an expert. It gives me the range of zoom and focus I need for now.

* EYE-FI COMPATIBLE: WOW. I cannot even tell you how much this busy mom loves this feature. If you get an eye-fi card, your pictures can be set up to automatically upload to your computer whenever you are within range of your synched wireless network. My husband set up a SmugMug account and the eye-fi capabilities. I take pics to my heart's content while out on walks, in the park, etc., and come home, then leave the camera on (auto-shut off after 8 minutes) to upload the pics. I can then tag and sort pictures later at my leisure. For a busy mom, this is amazingly useful. I don't have to take time out to upload the pics - the camera does that for me.

* BATTERY LIFE (for common use): So far, the battery we bought for the camera lasts very well during normal photo-taking. It's just a standard Canon battery for the rebel line and it charges quickly. Even when taking pics like a mad-woman, it lasts through a shoot. HD video eats it up more quickly, so be warned. Still, I rarely run out of juice during the day so long as I pop the battery into its charger in the evening. However, uploading is another story (See below in cons).

I've been hoping to upgrade from my Canon XT (350D) for some time and have gone back and and forth on all of the options. I finally read a review on the T3i which basically said that you'd be nuts not to get this camera - after all, people were paying thousands of dollars for the 1D Mark ii when it came out and this is far more capable. I remember dreaming about that camera and wishing I could afford one ... and now, here is the T3i and it's far more affordable and incredibly capable. It persuaded me that this would be enough camera for now! I don't have to spend thousands of dollars to get the top of the line camera because this one more than performs!

I took it out on a test run last week and I used the 18-55 IS II lens that's included in this package. The lens performs amazingly well also. I wish it had a little more range (I'm used to an 18-70, but I have really worn that lens out, which is why I wanted a package that included a new lens and this lens has been rated really well!) I'm really happy with the photos I've taken with this combination and will definitely keep using this lens.

I highly recommend this combination, especially if you need a full kit to start shooting!

I bought this bundle impressed with the value of the contents for the price. Boy was I wrong! I should've bought the camera on its own and the individual pieces locally at a camera accessory store. The T3i and 18-55mm lense are great! The 75-300mm lense is NOT the IS-USM(image stabilized, ultra sonic motor) version. It doesn't have the image stablization which is helpful for a lense with that range. Also the focusing is loud and slow compared to the USM version of the same lense. The extra battery included is an off brand and is super light. Compared to the Canon battery that comes with the camera I doubt this battery weighs 1/3 or performs for very long at all. The SDHC 16gb card that came with the bundle is only a class 2 (the lowest, new cards are class 10), which means transfer from the camera to the card is slow, extremely slowing down the rapid fire/burst function. The 'high speed' card reader is junk. The 1st time I used the reader to transfer images to my computer it corrupted the SD card and gave me a 'card access error.' I lost all my photos! I have since found out I could've taken the card to a local camera shop and they have a rescue program to restore corrupted cards (If I had only known before I accepted the loss of some great photos and formatted the card). The camera bag is decent quality. The tripod is super cheap and low quality. The neck on the tripod will not stay up (no locking feature) and is wobbly. First time using it with a light breeze outside and the tripod nearly blew over with my camera attached! Luckily I caught it.

All in all, I would NOT recommend this package even though I do recommend the camera. I have since had to purchase a new class 10 SDHC card, new HQ tripod, and new high speed card reader.

This kit is a great buy for the price it is offered. I would have easily spent over $100 for these accessories which are a must for any DSLRs.

You can check on internet, this is the best DSLR camera under $1000.

I did not use all accessories supplied with this kit but some of them were very useful. 32GB class 10 Memory card was the reason to choose this Kit. Along with that I got a great tripod, remote, additional battery and camera bag for the same price. I am fully enjoying these accessories.

I paid $18 more on this to buy from Amazon than buying it directly from the seller as it gave me lot more comfort to buy and rely on the policies of Amazon.

Accessories may not be great, but they serve the purpose. Telephoto lens did not look very useful (Anything that was a free accessory is not a bad deal at all).

I would highly recommend this kit for anyone looking to buy Canon T3i camera.

I bought this package for the t3i's hd video capabilities. First day I took it out on the job the case's strap broke. Next the charger broke. The tripod was terrible from the start. And just now while shooting a music video for a dj for my internship the sd card broke on me for no explainable reason. All of the Zeikos and Digital Film accessories are absolutely horrible. If you're willing to spend this much money on the camera and lenses alone, go for it. If you want quality accessories to go with it, don't buy from Sunset.

I was in the market for an entry level SLR to get back into photography. Last time I had a decent camera it used 35mm film. I took some time looking at different brands and decided on the Canon. Then I spent some time looking at prices and packages. I am very happy with the camera and two lenses. The extras in this bundle are ok. Generic flash, generic extra battery etc...but good to have in a pinch. I wanted something I could grow with as my skills come back. So far I've taken some great photos while boating and watching my kids sporting events. I agree with the other person's feedback on the case. Nothing special there, however I am using it as a storage case for the items I don't want to carry with me everyday and bought myself a photo backpack to go.

I really didn't need and have not used all of the items included. This is my first DSLR I wanted a full ready to go kit with everything I need. Since then, I've been educated and learned that you don't need everything here. Best thing to do is do your own research online at DSLR sites and then you will have an idea of what you want to buy. Especially don't by the kit lens. I ended up selling all my kit lens. Yes I spent more money now but I have in my kit a few high end lenses now. In the end I didn't get much of a value since i didn't use these "extra" accessories. I have a new camera bag now too. Overall the kit is a good deal if you dont' want to spend any more to have high quality photos. But what is the point of getting a T3i without spending the money for quality lens and accessories?

No I would not buy this kit again. Yes I would buy the camera again but only the camera body. I would buy a different camera bag because this can barely fit anything. I would also buy a better tripod also. This one is flimsy but works well if you don't want to spend the money.

I recommend this if you are not looking to expand on the hobby and get better quality photos.

I love love love this camera, I am new to the dslr world, so am still finding my way around it, much easier thanks to an app on my iPad! The camera takes amazing pictures, and it feels quite durable as well! The shipping was so fast as well! My recommendation would be to buy the camera alone, rather than this kit, as the kit is very low quality, the bag I got was nothing near what was pictured, it came with 2-8gb sd cards, which are class 3, the cleaning kit was a cloth that looks like a dryer sheet, and a small pack of q-tips. The tripod is ok, but doesnt glide all that well when extending, and seems relatively cheap. It was nice to receive a spare battery, but those are available fairly cheap on amazon, so I would advise against spending any extra money on this kit.

I received this package last week and must say i am real happy with the overall package price. How-ever there is a few items that i must say is so low quality & really isn't suitable for the camera it came with.

The full size tripod is not close enough to be sturdy enough for this camera & would only have the worry that it would fall over at some point. Mini Tripod also, is only good enough for a small point & shoot digi cam.

The flash gun, again too under-rated (specs) & low quality for a camera of this type.

The camera bag is far to small to carry the camera & equipment that was in the package. Barely enough room to carry the camera with Lens attached & battery charger and that is all you get inside it.

As i said though, overall this is a great deal. But i had to go out & purchase a new bag, tripod & a proper flash which has cost me approx. $500 at the local shops. No heartache really, but it did cost me more time to go and get these items. If i had known at the time of the order, i would of purchased these extras through Amazon at the time of the camera order & also saved more money this way.

What i would rather see included in this package, is for the above items to be removed and have the suppliers include a more suitable backpack style bag. I just think it's better to have less in the package, but have more quality & suitable items especially with a camera of this quality.

I hope this helps spme people out there that are looking to buy this or a similar package.

Choosing between the T3i, T2i, 60D and 7D, February 27, 2011

The Canon Rebel T3i takes the consumer level dSLR a couple steps closer to the mid-level Canon 60D with the addition of the rotating rear LCD screen, remote flash firing, and in-camera processing features. The already highly competent, older Rebel T2i already shared many important features with the 60D (and even features of the semi-pro 7D) including the 18 MP sensor, 63-zone exposure metering system, high ISO performance, HD movie capabilities, and Digic 4 image processor. With these new upgrades, it might make it even more difficult to choose between them. But there are some important differences.

If you are considering the Rebel T3i vs T2i, the Rebel T3i is replacing the T2i. Since both cameras share the same 18 megapixel sensor and Digic 4 processor, both the T2i and T3i will create images with exactly the same image quality, produce the same low light/ high ISO performance, shoot at 3.7 frames per second, and have nearly the same size and build quality. They are both offered with the same 18-55mm kit lens (with some minor cosmetic differences on the new T3i kit lens). The T3i is very slightly larger and heavier due to the addition of the rotating rear LCD monitor. And that is one of the biggest differences between the two cameras. Do you want and need a vari-angle rear screen or not? The other major difference is the ability of the T3i to remotely control multiple off-camera flashes. Like the 60D and 7D, you can use the built-in flash of the T3i to trigger other Canon Speedlites. Some other minor additions to the T3i include the Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, which is a feature borrowed from point and shoot cameras. When in Auto mode, the T3i will make a determination of what type of scene you are shooting - close-up, portrait, landscape, etc. - and automatically configure the camera settings accordingly. However, if you want to use a powerful and costly digital SLR as a point and shoot, you should probably save the money and just buy a nice, high quality point and shoot like the Canon S95. Other additional but not essential upgrades include the in-camera processing Creative Filters, and the ability to choose different image size ratios and to rate your images. (Helpful hint: press the Q Button while in image playback and you can access features like rating, rotating, and Creative Filters.) There is also a marginally helpful Feature Guide which gives brief descriptions of various settings and some additional video features like Video Snapshot, which you can use to shoot short video clips that are automatically joined together into a video, with music.

Canon Rebel T3i vs. 60D vs. 7D
Sensor and Image Quality: All three cameras share a very similar sensor and 18 megapixels, and so their image quality will be virtually the same. All are capable of taking professional quality images.

Exposure Metering: The three cameras all share the latest 63-zone, dual-layer exposure metering system and 4 metering modes. That means they will all determine the exposure virtually identically and enable you to take properly exposed photos in most every situation, including difficult back-lit scenes. The size of the areas metered for Partial and Spot metering vary slightly between the cameras, but that isn't anything critical.

Autofocus: The T3i shares a similar autofocus system to the 60D, with 9 focus points and three auto focusing modes. However the 9 AF points of the 60D are more sensitive than those of the T3i: all are cross-type in the 60D, only the center is cross-type in the T3i. The 60D autofocus system is much less complex than the sophisticated AF system of the 7D with its 19 AF point system and its additional Zone, Spot, and Expansion focus modes. These various modes address how you want to deal with and group the numerous AF points. Plus the custom settings of the 7D allow one to customize how the AF system works - how it tracks subjects, how it deals with objects that come between you and your initial subject, how quickly it responds to these changes of possible subjects that are at different distances from you, etc. However, if you are not an avid sports photographer, a wildlife shooter, or someone who understands, needs, and will use the elaborate features of the 7D AF system, then this shouldn't sway you.

Construction: As you can probably figure out from the prices, each camera is not built the same. The T3i has relatively strong construction of a stainless steel frame with polycarbonate body. The 60D has a stronger and lighter aluminum frame and polycarbonate body, but not as strong as the 7D's magnesium alloy construction. The 60D also has some amount of weather sealing - more than the T3i, less than the 7D. But for most users, including even those using the camera daily or in travel situations, the construction of any of these cameras is far more than good enough, strong enough, and durable enough.

I searched high and low looking for the perfect "package". This one did not let me down. The kit was less than suggested retail to my door. The most important thing I was looking for was a 32gb class 10 card to accompany my new camera and this package was it. Everything is in working order except I cant figure out how to get the remote to work. This is by no means top quality accessories however you really get a lot for less then the retail price of the camera. Do yourself a favor and look no further than this kit here!

I finally pulled the trigger on purchasing my first DSLR camera. I wanted the Canon T3i plus I wanted both the standard lens and a zoom lens. I came across this great packaged deal from Cameta Camera. I was a little hesitant because I was not familiar with this Amazon merchant, but the reviews on this seller were very positive, and this deal was the best I found on the internet. I wasn't really looking for accessories, but Cameta throws in so many accessories - really, I have everything I need to start...filters, flash, extra battery, memory card, card reader, card holder, camera bag, cleaning kit, screen protectors...I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Plus, it comes with both the 18-55 IS II Lens and the 55-250 IS zoom lens in addition to the Canon T3i body. I priced these items on various different websites, including ala carte here on Amazon, and Cameta offered the best deal hands down. While shipping is expensive ($18) - compared to $0 with Amazon Prime which doesn't apply to this buy, the overall price is still less than other sellers. I received my shipment in less than a week. So I was extremely worried ordering a camera this expensive online and having arrive new and in tact, but I swear they fast-tracked shipment or something because this package arrived the next day! FedEx showed it hadn't even left the building on their online tracker but this package arrived super fast with everything in perfect condition. I am so relieved and happy with my camera, the amazing price, and all of the goodies it came with for basically FREE!!

Skip this package, the tripod was pretty cheap. The top broke the first week. All the cables were nice and the recharge haven't used but the case sucks. I actually ordered another case which is much more stylish and less tourist. Len's is the standard...all and all if I did it again, I would have bought the camera and everything separately, live and learn.

The camera was great perfect and as advertised. The accessories on the other hand are of lesser quality. The memory card stopped working after 1 month. There is also the issue of the stand being of the cheapest quality, same for the flash. But everything else was great and the response time of the seller was also great.
